A German cleaning group that also builds robots

Kärcher is best known for pressure washers, window vacs and wet and dry vacuums, and robots are one line inside a very large business. The company is Alfred Kärcher SE & Co. KG of Winnenden, Germany, and its own sites describe it as a family-owned global leader in cleaning technology. Its About page gives the scale: sales of 3.483 billion euros in the 2025 financial year, the highest in its history, 17,000 employees in 170 companies across 87 countries, and over 50,000 service centers worldwide. That service network matters more than the turnover for a robot buyer, because a machine with a roller, pads, brushes and a dock will need parts. Kärcher's Home and Garden range covers robot vacuums and mops and a window cleaning robot, and a separate professional division sells the KIRA cleaning robots for commercial floors.

The range: four mopping ideas, one app

Kärcher sorts its robots by how they mop, which is a more useful split than price, and its international site sets out four series.

The RVC and RCV series are vacuums with a wiping function. A microfiber cloth under the robot is lightly moistened from an onboard tank, good for light dirt rather than scrubbing. The UK store calls the RCV 3 "the entry-level model." It gives it 2,500 Pa of suction, a 120 min run time, a 2-in-1 waste container of 330 ml with a 170 ml fresh water tank, and a separate dry-only container of 500 ml for vacuum-only days. The Singapore product page adds a sound power level of 67 dB(A), a 3.2 Ah lithium-ion battery, a charging time of 230 minutes and an area performance of 85 m²/h. The newer RVC 3 Comfort is a dry vacuuming specialist with up to 15,000 pascals of suction, a self-emptying station, brushes designed to reduce hair wrapping, and the ability to climb thresholds up to 25 mm high.

The RCV 5 sits above the RCV 3 in the UK store, which calls it "the smart one" and its top model. It keeps LiDAR but adds a dual laser system and a camera for object detection, so shoes and cables are avoided, plus an ultrasound sensor that spots carpet. On carpet an Auto Boost function raises suction, and in mopping mode the robot steers around rugs altogether. The UK page lists 5,000 Pa, a 120 min run time, a 330 ml dry waste container and a 240 ml fresh water tank.

The RVM series uses rotating mopping discs with microfiber pads, washed and moistened in a multifunction station. The RVM 4 Comfort is the "middle class all-rounder," with 15,000 Pa of suction, a mop disc that extends to the edge, pads that lift when carpet is detected, and a station that empties the dust container and washes and dries the pads.

The RVF series is the top of the range and uses what Kärcher calls its tried-and-tested FC roller technology. The RVF 7 Comfort vacuums at 10,000 Pa with two side brushes and wet-cleans with a microfiber roller that is continuously moistened with fresh water and wiped, while dirty water goes to a separate tank. Its station charges the robot, refills fresh water, empties dirty water and dry dirt, and washes and dries the roller. It also carries a live camera, so you can drive it remotely through the app, check on pets and send live messages.

The RCF 3 is the specialist. It is a robot mop only, with no separate suction unit, built for thorough wet cleaning of water-resistant hard floors. Its roller picks up light dry dirt such as crumbs and rice into the dirty water tank, and a sensor avoids carpets unless you switch that off. Kärcher suggests that with regular use, "there's no need to even take the vacuum cleaner out of the cupboard." The FAQ adds that the RCF 3 has three water flow levels and stores up to five maps.

The Home Robots app and the details

Kärcher calls its system "Robot, cloud and app: three components, one cohesive system." The Kärcher Home Robots app is free on the Apple and Google stores. It handles room-by-room programs, no-go zones and virtual walls, spot and area cleaning, a "Cleaning schedule 2.0" that sets the program per area as well as per time, multiple maps for multiple floors, cleaning history with distances and square meters covered, and a "Find robot" sound. It also tracks accessory wear and tells you when parts are due for replacement. On the RCV models the app sets the language and volume of the voice output.

Data handling gets its own paragraph. Kärcher says all traffic between the app and the robot runs through a cloud on servers located in Germany only, and that regular software and security updates are provided. The FAQ is candid about limits: the RCV robots can link to Alexa and Google Home, but the RCF 3 cannot, and the robots need a 2.4 GHz network.

Maintenance is designed in. Every part that touches dirt can be removed and washed, and the rollers, pads and cloths are machine-washable at 60 °C. For the roller robots Kärcher says to use only its RM 536 detergent, warning that other brands or too much detergent can cause foaming, damage the device and invalidate the warranty. The dock wants 0.5 m of clearance on each side and 1.5 m in front.

Buying and support

The UK store offers free shipping over £50, multiple payment options, a newsletter discount of 10% off a first order and "Up to 6 Years Product Guarantee," while the Irish store states a 2 Year Product Guarantee and free shipping over €50. Both link to register-your-product, downloads and help pages. Robots appear in the stores for the UK, Ireland, Singapore, India and Brazil, among others, and the Brazilian site lists the RCV 3 and RCV 5.

Who it suits

Kärcher suits a buyer who cares about how a robot mops as much as how it vacuums. If your floors are mostly tile, stone or sealed wood, the roller robots, the RVF 7 Comfort and the RCF 3, are the reason to look at this brand. The RCV 3 is a sensible, modest starter for a flat of hard floors and low-pile rugs, and the RCV 5 is for homes with cables and shoes on the floor. Anyone uneasy about app data will note the German-only servers.

It is a less natural fit for deep-pile carpet, which Kärcher's own pages steer away from, and the RCF 3 must not be used on water-sensitive floors such as untreated cork. For everyone else, a large parts and service network and published figures make it a reassuring, grown-up choice.
